LAVA UPDATE 3/20/08 0700 hrs:

Current conditions: easy - moderate hike. Lava can be seen entering the ocean from the new viewing area. Lava has approached this viewing area to within 500 ft. Very easy to get to and great views if you can handle the crowds.

EXPLOSION AT HALEMA'UMA'U CRATER!! There has been an explosion at the Kilauea Summit. Rocks and debre have flown onto the viewing area of Halema'uma'u Crater and scattered throughout 75 acres. The largest chunk of debris measured in at 35 cubic feet! The last time anything like this has happened was in 1924!
